November Isle of Grain
Initially I began painting views that appealed to me directly from the landscape onto watercolour paper postcards. This became part of my practice so I made sure to always have a tin of water colour postcards with me wherever I went, this meant I could capture the fleeting changes brought about by the seasons and the cycles of agricultural activity. I sustained this habit for a year, resulting in over 60 mini gouaches.
The gouaches below are arranged in rows for each season beginning with autumn and ending with summer. I like the notion of these being an alternative to photography, similar in size and approach.
Not dissimilar to the act of gleaning, whilst making these landscape studies I also found items that I gathered and then photographed and made into a short film. Many items were weathered and carried their own story of the landscape.
