Brisons Veor from the Cottage
I spent a week long residency in Brisons Veor, Cape Cornwall in January 2016.
It was exhilarating to be so close to the sea, in amongst the elements. I used the time to draw the fishing huts and coastal landscape. The huts reignited my curiosity to explore and record abandoned spaces with traces left by human presence.
During the residency I discovered Stoneman Gallery where the work of Breon O Casey was on display. I had found a hidden gem. I felt a deep connection with his subject matter and an excitement with his approach to work. It spurred me on to continue trying and combining different processes and to keep playing with materials. But also to pare down and simplify, be it marks and gestures in painting and drawing or the shapes of clay vessels and sculptures.
The landscape and weather during the residency were challenging. However, I came away inspired by Breon O’Casey and armed with topographical drawings, a subdued winter palette and a wealth of weathered textures and streamlined shapes to inform my practice.
