Plane Trees Rome
oil on canvas
I use a variety of painting techniques and surfaces dependent on where I am and how long I want to spend on a subject. The scale also changes. When painting in King’s Wood, Kent the paper was bigger than me, an expanse rolled out onto the forest floor for me to step into. For the series of gouaches, the paintings were postcard size.
When the conditions are right I choose to paint in oils on linen but if I need to be quick I will use acrylics and paint on any surface to hand. For the caravan paintings I used found wood and board as the texture of the surface was important.
I love the fluidity of paint. I love mixing colours and creating layers of paint. Adding, scraping back, inventing tools to apply the paint. Paint is a living thing and although I love it in its pure form I also use it in my sketchbooks, mixing different paints with collage and drawing materials.
